CONVERSAS CAMBERWELL was a fortnightly series of open-talks formed as an experiment in flattening hierachies between speaker and listener, organised with Marcie Mintrose. During the event, three Conversadores (those who talk at Conversas) brought something to share with the gathered group for thirty minutes each. As the title suggests itself, Conversas (Conversations in Portuguese) aims at an honest setup from which everyone can benefit. Across the dozen events we ran, we invited the likes of:
- David Cross, Reader in Fine Art at the University of the Arts
- The artist Luke Turner of LaBeouf, Rönkkö & Turner
- The self-organised education group Evening Class
- Representatives of Antiuniversity, an experiment to challenge institutionalised education
- Nick Wrack, a local barrister and socialist campaigner
- Students from Camberwell College of Arts
Context
Conversas Camberwell sat within a larger project initiated in Lisbon by Constança Saraiva and Mafalda Fernandes, in 2012. Nowadays, it is a project of many people and cities.
I first became involved in the project when I was invited to speak about my research for the four hour academy at Conversa #24 in Rotterdam, organised by Constança at Upominki.
I was later invited back to speak at Conversa #41 held in Publication Studio Rotterdam.
